Polypropylene homopolymers for BOPP film

A BOPP film grade proves itself on the stretching line. Biaxially oriented polypropylene film is stretched several times over in both directions, and a resin that does not stretch evenly breaks the film and stops the line. This page explains what a homopolymer needs for tenter and tubular lines and for plain, coextruded or metallised film, and shows the grades we can supply.

— REQUIREMENTS

What a BOPP line asks of the resin

On a tenter line the cast sheet is stretched roughly five times lengthways and eight to ten times across. Every gel, contaminant or weak spot is stretched with it. The result is a film break, lost time and scrap.

The resin also has to give a flat film with an even thickness profile, so the rolls wind and slit cleanly. After that the converter wants high gloss, low haze and a surface that takes corona treatment, print and, for barrier film, a layer of metal.

— SELECTION

Choosing a biaxially oriented polypropylene resin

The core of a BOPP film is homopolymer, and its crystallinity decides how it stretches. A homopolymer with slightly lower isotacticity stretches over a wider temperature window. A highly isotactic one gives stiffer film but is less forgiving on the line. Molecular weight distribution matters as well, because it affects how evenly the sheet draws.

For film that will be metallised, look for a grade with no slip or antiblock agents and no added calcium stearate. In coextruded film, slip and antiblock go into the thin skin layers as masterbatch, so the core grade can stay clean.

Check that the data sheet names your film type and your line. A grade made for one line is not automatically right for the other.

— PROCESSING

Tenter and tubular lines

Tenter lines stretch the sheet lengthways first, then crossways. Tubular double-bubble lines stretch in both directions at once and give a balanced film. The two need different stretching behaviour from the resin. Some BOPP homopolymers are also extruded into sheet for solid-phase thermoforming, covered on sheet and thermoforming. Tell us which line you run and the film thickness.

— DOCUMENTATION

Food contact and recyclability

Most BOPP film ends up in food packs. The producer's declaration of compliance under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 covers the grade, and the film maker issues its own for the film. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 has applied since 12 August 2026, and its design-for-recycling rules reach flexible packs from 2030 at the earliest. BOPP laminated to a cast PP film grade keeps the whole pack in one polymer family.
