High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic used in bottles, industrial containers, caps, closures, film and selected pipe applications. It combines relatively low weight with useful stiffness, toughness and resistance to many chemicals.
Genesis Polymers Europe supplies Velogy HDPE under the KeyForm, AdvyForm and CertyForm brands. The portfolio includes materials for established conversion processes, more demanding performance requirements and healthcare applications. Choosing a brand is one part of the specification; the grade must also match the manufacturing process and conditions of use.
What makes HDPE different from LDPE
HDPE has comparatively little branching along its polymer chains. The chains can pack more closely, creating greater crystallinity and a stiffer material than LDPE. This makes HDPE a practical choice for self-supporting containers and other products where rigidity matters.
Density helps describe this balance, but it is not a complete performance specification. Molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and polymer structure also affect melt behaviour, toughness and resistance to cracking. Two HDPE grades with similar density can behave differently during conversion and in service.
Natural HDPE is typically translucent to opaque depending on thickness and structure. It provides a useful moisture barrier, but oxygen-sensitive products may need additional barrier measures. Outdoor exposure requires a suitable stabilisation strategy; unqualified assumptions about UV resistance should be avoided.
Stiffness, impact strength and stress crack resistance
Stiffness helps a container retain its shape and carry a stacking load. Impact strength describes its response to sudden forces, such as a drop during handling. Environmental stress crack resistance, usually abbreviated to ESCR, addresses another failure mechanism: cracking caused by the combined effect of sustained stress and certain surrounding substances.
A container can have good stiffness and still need better ESCR for its intended contents. Detergents and other surface-active substances can make stress cracking a key design consideration. Resin selection should therefore consider the contents, filling conditions, storage temperature, expected handling and service duration.
ESCR figures are meaningful only with their test method and conditions. They are useful for comparing relevant material options but do not replace testing of the actual package. Wall distribution, corners, closures and residual stresses can all affect the finished container.
HDPE processing routes and applications
Extrusion blow moulding. Typical products: Bottles, jerry cans and drums. Important selection factors: Melt strength, wall distribution, drop performance, stiffness and ESCR.
Injection or compression moulding. Typical products: Caps, closures and selected moulded components. Important selection factors: Flow, dimensional control, sealing geometry and mechanical performance.
Film extrusion. Typical products: Thin packaging film and bags. Important selection factors: Film stability, stiffness, toughness and thickness control.
Tape and monofilament extrusion. Typical products: Tapes, nets and technical filaments. Important selection factors: Drawing behaviour, strength and processing consistency.
Pipe extrusion. Typical products: Application-specific pipe systems. Important selection factors: Long-term performance, temperature class, pressure requirements and relevant qualification.
A blow-moulding grade and a closure grade are not interchangeable simply because both are HDPE. Each process places different demands on the melt and on the solidified product.
Selecting HDPE for containers and closures
For bottles and industrial packaging, start with the package size, contents and handling conditions. A large drum needs a different balance of melt strength and mechanical properties from a small bottle. Where dangerous-goods packaging is involved, the complete package must meet the applicable requirements; a resin name alone is not a transport approval.
For caps and closures, consider the moulding process, opening and closing behaviour, sealing design and interaction with the container. Beverage applications may add sensory requirements, while exposure to contents or cleaning agents can make ESCR important. Higher flow can support processing, but closure performance still depends on the complete material and design specification.
For pipe applications, select against the actual service conditions and system requirements. A specialised polyethylene grade for raised-temperature service is not equivalent to a general-purpose HDPE grade. Product and system qualification remain essential to the application.
Velogy HDPE supplied by Genesis Polymers Europe
KeyForm HDPE covers a range of packaging and extrusion uses. KeyForm H0401 is an option for extrusion blow moulding, while KeyForm H0100 addresses large-container applications such as L-ring drums. KeyForm H1200 provides a high-flow injection-moulding option for applications including closures and housewares. KeyForm H0301 illustrates the range's thin-film applications.
AdvyForm HDPE includes AdvyForm H0200 and H0202 for demanding industrial containers where ESCR is an important selection criterion. AdvyForm H0800 addresses beverage closure applications. AdvyForm H0260 is a PE-RT Type II option for applications such as underfloor heating pipe; it should be evaluated against the relevant pipe and system requirements.
CertyForm HDPE focuses on healthcare and pharmaceutical applications. CertyForm H0700 is an option for moulded caps and tube components, CertyForm H1201 for high-flow moulded applications such as medical closures, and CertyForm H0201 for extrusion-blow-moulded pharmaceutical containers.
Explore the KeyForm, AdvyForm and CertyForm brand pages for more grade examples. The brand structure describes the offering, while the individual technical data and documentation establish suitability for the intended use.
Questions about HDPE
Is the highest-density HDPE always the best choice? No. Higher density can favour stiffness, but the application may place greater importance on impact performance, ESCR or processing behaviour. Select the property balance needed by the finished product.
Does chemical resistance guarantee resistance to cracking? No. Chemical compatibility and environmental stress cracking are related but different considerations. A material may tolerate contact with a substance yet still crack when stress and exposure act together. Application testing should reflect both effects.
Is HDPE suitable for food or medical use? Selected grades can be considered for these applications when the appropriate documentation is available. Suitability depends on the individual grade, manufacturing process and intended contact or use conditions. Neither the polymer abbreviation nor a general brand description establishes finished-product compliance.
Can HDPE be recycled? HDPE can be mechanically recycled in suitable collection and reprocessing systems. Product colour, labels, closures, contents and other materials affect the outcome. Assess the complete article and its likely recycling stream rather than relying only on the resin identification code.
A short history of HDPE
Catalytic polymerisation developments in the 1950s enabled polyethylene with much less branching than high-pressure LDPE. This opened the way to stiffer packaging and engineering uses. Further control of molecular structure has expanded the available combinations of processability, toughness and long-term performance.
