Polypropylene for car interior trim, bumpers and battery cases

PP for car interior trim, bumpers and battery cases is chosen against a document: the carmaker's material specification. It sets limits for stiffness, low-temperature impact, scratch, odour, emissions and heat ageing, and no part goes into production until it has passed. This page covers impact polypropylene and homopolymer for parts moulded directly, and the base resins that compounders turn into filled and modified automotive grades.

— REQUIREMENTS

What the specification asks for

Interior trim is seen and touched for the life of the car. It must resist scratching, keep its colour under sunlight through the glass and give off little odour in a hot cabin. Bumpers must absorb a low-speed knock in winter and, when unpainted, look right straight from the tool. Battery cases must hold their shape when warm, resist the sulphuric acid in a lead-acid battery and keep their impact strength as they age. Every part also has to fit, so low warpage and consistent shrinkage count as much as the property data.

— SELECTION

Scratch-resistant PP and the stiffness-impact balance

  • Impact copolymer is the base of most bumpers and many interior parts. High-crystallinity copolymers raise stiffness while keeping useful impact strength.

  • UV-stabilised copolymers are made for interior trim. Unpainted exterior parts need a UV package rated for outdoor exposure.

  • Impact copolymers with heat-ageing stabilisation suit battery cases and parts that run warm.

  • High-flow homopolymers, including metallocene types, act as flow modifiers and building blocks in compounds.

Scratch resistance comes from stiffness, surface hardness and the grain, and in compounds from scratch additives. Compare notched impact at the low temperature your specification names, not only at 23 °C. Odour and emissions depend on the grade and on melt temperature, so test moulded parts, not pellets. Many interior and bumper parts are made from talc-filled compounds; see compounding and masterbatch.

— GRADES

Grades we can supply

Short descriptions say whether a grade is for direct moulding or a building block for compounds.

— NEED HELP CHOOSING?

Not sure which grade fits?

Send us the part, the OEM material specification and your route: direct moulding or compounding first.

— PROCESSING

Moulded direct or compounded first

Trim, bumpers and battery cases are injection moulded. Large grained parts need even flow and low warpage; long, thin trim needs high flow. If the OEM approves a compound rather than a base polymer, the compounder holds the approval and we supply the base resin. Tell us which route you are on, because it changes which data matters.

— DOCUMENTATION

Qualification, IMDS and recycled content

OEM approval covers the part and its material, so a change of grade usually means new tests. Material data for the design file goes through the International Material Data System (IMDS); ask us for the grade's IMDS reference and regulatory summary. Under Regulation (EU) 2026/1738 on end-of-life vehicles, new vehicle types type-approved from 1 September 2032 must contain at least 15 % plastic recycled from post-consumer waste, and 25 % from 1 September 2036. The share is counted over all the plastic in the vehicle type.
