A storage box that cracks when dropped in a cold garage, a chair that sags after one summer, a jug that dulls in the dishwasher: each consumer part fails a different test.
Each application has its own test. Housewares and appliances are judged in the kitchen on gloss, scratching, dishwasher cycles and food-contact paperwork; small appliances and white goods add stiff, stable housings and inner parts. Furniture and garden furniture must carry a load outdoors for years, so creep and UV stabilisation come first, as they do for lawn and garden equipment. Toys, sports and leisure depend on impact at low temperature and on toy-safety documentation. Crates and boxes used as reusable transport packaging, and luggage shells, need stiffness under a stack and toughness in a cold store.
Polypropylene homopolymer or copolymer. A polypropylene homopolymer gives stiffness and surface gloss, which is why it is common in kitchenware. An impact polypropylene copolymer trades some stiffness for toughness below zero, which suits toys, crates and garden goods. HDPE covers buckets, bins and outdoor toys.
Board and sheet. Low-flow copolymers are also extruded into corrugated and hollow board, covered on sheet extrusion and thermoforming. Describe the part and we will name grades to sample.

The maker of the finished article carries the compliance duty; the resin producer documents the grade. Kitchenware, cool boxes and food crates are food-contact articles under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, which needs a written declaration of compliance at each stage of supply before retail. Toys are assessed and CE marked by the toy maker under Directive 2009/48/EC, which Regulation (EU) 2025/2509 replaces from 1 August 2030. Outdoor furniture is tested as a finished product under the EN 581 series, and appliance makers answer for the RoHS substance limits. We pass on the producer's declarations and regulatory summary for the grade you choose.

Common questions
Read two data sheet values together: flexural modulus for stiffness and notched impact at the lowest temperature the article will see. Homopolymer wins on the first, impact copolymer on the second, and high-stiffness impact copolymers sit between them. Clear boxes and jugs call for a clarified random copolymer.
Sometimes. The same impact copolymer can make a storage box, a toy and a crate, but each article is judged against a different test: food contact for kitchenware, toy safety for toys, stacking and cold-store service for crates. Check the grade against every requirement for the article: food contact, toy safety and mechanical performance need separate evidence where they apply.
